Vanity Hair

Commissions - July 2011

This was my first experiment with mirror. I was excited to make a piece that constantly changes as you walk past it, while fully integrating its surroundings. Vanity is symbolized, in the Western world, by the peacock. The shape of the mahogany and the mirrors that attach to it represent the bird’s tail. Naturally, one could assume that, being in a hair salon, I’m referring to an obsession with one’s appearance and a need to see oneself in the mirror from every angle. But, to quote Sir Max Beerbohm, “To say a man is vain means merely that he is pleased with effect he produces on other people. A conceited man is satisfied with the effect he produces on himself.”
